The donner party was a group of pioneers who set out for CA in a covered wagon train in 1846. After a treacherous journey across the country they arrrived here in early November but were unable to pass through the Sierra Nevadas due to heavy early season snowfall. They were forced to camp here for the winter as help didn't arrive until February - 4 months later. Of the 87 original members, 48 survived and reached California, many of them having eaten the dead for survival.
